Das Ende des 2. Weltkriegs markiert auch das Ende propellergetriebener Militärflugzeuge. Schon im Frühjahr 1945 forderte die US-Luftwaffe einen neuen Jäger als Nachfolger für die P-61, strahlgetrieben, ca. 550 Meilen schnell und für den Einsatz in hohen Höhen geeignet. Der Erstflug des Allwetter-Abfangjägers war so überzeugend, dass kurz darauf 48 Muster der F-89 bestellt wurden. Im November 1950 flog die erste von über 1.000 Serienmaschinen.
