Die Verwendung von Belagerungstürmen ist Tausende von Jahren alt und erreichte im Mittelalter ihren Höhepunkt. Belagerungstürme wurden verwendet, um Truppen über eine feindliche Ringmauer zu bringen. Wenn sich ein Belagerungsturm in der Nähe einer Mauer befand, ließ er eine Laufplanke zwischen sich und der Mauer fallen. Truppen konnten dann auf die Mauern und in die Burg oder Stadt stürmen.
